Biometric access control for UAE logistics and industrial sites
The UAE continues to strengthen its position as a major logistics and industrial hub. In September 2026, KEZAD Group announced a new 150,000-square-metre logistics facility in Abu Dhabi for JINGDONG Property, while CBRE highlighted sustained demand across the country’s industrial and logistics market. As these sites become larger and more automated, controlling access to sensitive areas is becoming an increasingly important security challenge.
Logistics sites create specific access challenges
Warehouses, distribution centres and industrial facilities bring together employees, drivers, contractors, maintenance teams and visitors. Their access rights can vary considerably depending on the person, the zone and the time of day.
Loading areas, technical rooms, storage zones and control centres may therefore require stronger identity verification than general circulation areas.
Cards and badges remain useful, but they authenticate a credential rather than the person carrying it. Biometric readers add another level of assurance by linking an access right directly to an authorised individual.
This issue is similar to that found in other critical infrastructures, such as UAE data centers, where secure and traceable access is essential.
Choosing biometrics for demanding environments
Industrial sites can expose equipment to dust, heat, impacts and outdoor conditions. Biometric technology must therefore be selected according to the environment as well as the expected user flow.
IDEMIA’s MorphoAccess® SIGMA Extreme, distributed by Biotime Biometrics, was designed for demanding environments including industrial sites, seaports, airports, mines and energy facilities. Its IP65 and IK09-rated construction provides protection against dust, water and impacts.
For entrances with higher pedestrian flows, contactless solutions such as MorphoWave™ SP provide another approach by authenticating fingerprints without requiring users to touch the sensor.
The objective is not to deploy the same technology everywhere, but to adapt authentication to each access point.
Biometrics within a wider security strategy
The growth of UAE logistics infrastructure is also accompanied by increasingly structured security requirements. Dubai’s Preventive Systems Manual, for example, includes access-control requirements for several types of logistics facilities. For air-cargo sites, electronic identification cards and biometric readers are specifically listed among the technologies that can be used at controlled access points.
Biometric access control therefore forms part of a broader security architecture combining identity verification, surveillance, perimeter protection and traceability.
Based in Dubai, Biotime Biometrics provides IDEMIA biometric technologies and integration support across the Middle East. As logistics and industrial infrastructure continues to expand in the UAE, robust biometric solutions can help organisations secure sensitive areas while maintaining efficient movement across their sites.
